2018 TWR (Te Whare Ra) "Toru" White Field Blend Marlborough

SKU #1390481 93 points Raymond Chan

Bright, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, lighter on the rim. The nose is firm and taut but elegantly presented with a core of exotic lime and citrus fruit that speaks of Riesling at present, along with subtle notes of florals and spice with stonefruit elements. This has a positive and deep core and unfolds fresh nuances of minerals. Medium-dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has very good depth and intensity of finely concentrated flavours of exotic citrus fruit and florals, unfolding rose-petal and Turkish Delight suggestions of Gewurztraminer, harmoniously melded with stonefruits and honeysuckle. The palate is complete and balanced with soft acidity and a smooth-flowing line, carrying to a light, nuanced, lingering finish. This is a deep and intensely flavoured, finely concentrated medium-dry aromatic white blend with harmonious spice, floral, stonefruit and honeysuckle flavours on a smooth-flowing palate. Match with Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine over the next 3 years. 'Toru' means 'three' in Maori. Hand-picked and hand-sorted fruit from the TWR 'Home' Block, given skin contact and co-fermented as field blend of 75% Gewurztraminer, 16% Riesling and 9% Pinot Gris, to 13.3% alc. and 7 g/L RS. 951 cases made. Certified BioGro organic. (12/2018)

This is fabulously drinkable; it is filled with delectable stone fruit and citrus flavours with floral and spice nuances. The palate is succulent and fleshy, delivering splendid fruit intensity and vibrancy, backed by whispering sweetness and lively acidity. Flavoursome, comforting and irresistibly appealing. A blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Style: Off-dry. At its best: now to 2022. (12/2018)

A co-fermented blend of the aromatic varieties Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Soft, fresh and subtly sweet white wine that reflects the character of all three varieties with a slightly dominant influence from Gewürztraminer. A pure and gentle wine with a seductively silken texture. (5/2019)

K&L Notes

TWR (Te Whare Ra) Wines, operated by our favorite wife and husband team, Anna and Jason Flowerday, has some gorgeous new offerings, all receiving fantastic critical acclaim. Their devotion to organic and biodynamic farming shows up in the flavor of the wines. They are fresh, delicate, graceful and intricate. Their passion lies in the aromatic whites and they make a few standout ones. The 2018 TWR Toru White Field Blend Marlborough is a fun blend of Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Gris (Toru means “three” in Maori) that are co-fermented. Tropical lychee and guava meld beautifully with white peach blossom and lively acidity.

Not only has TWR long been my favorite producer out of New Zealand, but this Toru is the ultimate summer sipper to carry you through the warm days. The Gewurz, Riesling, Pinot Gris blend makes a light -bodied, but super flavorful wine, with fresh flavors and low alcohol for those warm weather evenings. Made in an off-dry style, this wine pairs particularly well with Indian and Thai cuisines, but makes a fantastic apertif as well.

New Zealand

- New Zealand is an extremely diverse wine-growing nation. The long history of producing wine started in the 1830s with wineries such as Mission Estate (1850) and Te Mata Estate (1896) still producing wine today. The two islands hold a multitude of different growing climates ranging from warmer areas such as Hawke’s Bay to very cool regions such as Waitaki, and Awatere. Most regions are defined as Maritime with the exception being Central Otago that has a moderate Continental climate with the high elevation creating dramatic diurnal swings in temperature. The plethora of grapes grown in New Zealand reflects this diverse microclimate make up. Everything has a place here, Bordeaux varietals and Syrah in Hawke’s Bay, Chardonnay and Pinot in Nelson, Pinot Noir and Riesling in Central Otago , aromatic whites in Waipara and pretty much everything you can imagine in Marlborough. New Zealand is also one of the “greenest” wine producing nations on earth (94% of wine certified sustainable in 2013) with a strong focus on organic and Biodynamic farming.
