1981 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

Wine Spectator: "A fine mature claret with an impressive freshness. Excellent ruby color with subtle aromas of cherry and green tobacco. This wine shows vivid fruit flavors with mineral undertones and a fine silky texture of tannins. Delicious now but should improve." (10/1994)

1981 Pichon Lalande, Pauillac (375mL)

We love these so-called off vintages from the classic producers because you get much more bang for your buck. '81 Pichon is a long time K&L favorite. Robert Parker says… 'The 1981 is a very successful wine, with a more compact aromatic and flavor profile than the 1982. In that sense it is more classic than the flamboyant 1982. Unlike many 1981s, Pichon Lalande achieved wonderful ripeness, and the result is a medium-bodied, richly fruity, fragrant wine without the greenness and astringent tannins that so many 1981s possess. The finish is long and sup ...

1981 Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Jordan Vineyard and Winery is based in Healdsburg in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County. It was founded in 1972 and makes just two wines: a Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley and a Chardonnay from Russian River. From start to finish, this expression of Jordan Estate Alexander Valley fruit clearly displays characteristics of a slowly and carefully aged wine. Recent tasting notes from the winery (10/2013): "The 1981 now shows aromatics of dried black cherry, plums and raisins accompanied by savory notes of dried herbs, olive and tobacco. The 750mL ...

1981 Moulin des Carruades, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1981 Moulin des Carruades, Pauillac. Wine Spectator: "Christophe Salin explains that Carruades was first a domaine wine (he says he actually had a very good 1859 at Lafite 2 weeks ago). 'In the 20th century, it became the second wine of Lafite until the late 1960s, when it was renamed Moulin des Carruades (certain sommeliers were pretending Carruades de Lafite was a special confidential cuvée on top of Lafite! We had to stop that). Finally, we decided in the early 1980s to go back to Carruades de Lafite Rothschild and..actually Carruades de Lafite now. Thus, it is absolutely correct to find in the 1980s (before 1986) two labels for the same vintage with different names … very confusing indeed. The good news is that since ’86, everything is clear again!'" (02/2012)

He was one of the first winemakers to revive western Sonoma County as a wine-growing region after Prohibition. Today, Dehlinger remains an independent and family-owned/operated winery known for its quality wines with a focus on entirely estate-grown grapes.
